In environmentally aware times like these every choice you make, from using the same bag more than once and buying biodegradable goods such as eco-friendly nappies, is vitally important.

The use of disposable nappies is increasing due to their convenience. In the UK alone 3 billion disposable nappies are used every year and this generates over half a million tonnes of waste! All of which ends up in landfill as it is not biodegradable, or incinerated, which produces massive amounts of pollution. This has a massive negative impact on the environment and one baby alone uses around 6000 disposable nappies before being potty trained. For this reason, more and more people are opting to use cloth nappies, or eco-friendly versions available from companies such as Bambo and Nature Babies.

Benefits of cloth nappies: They are economical, reusable and massively beneficial to the environment. They are designed to be as absorbent as disposable nappies but are kinder to the baby`s skin and it has been reported that less leaks occur using cloth. They can be washed after use and reused within 24 hours as they are also designed to dry quickly. They cost between £4 to £10 on average but can be used 100s of times, making them a much cheaper alternative to disposable nappies. They also look much cuter and feel more comfortable for the baby! Brands such as Nature Baby and Huggle are the most popular, although Huggle nappies are the most stylish.

Benefits of eco-friendly nappies: Brands such Moltex OKo and Bambo are the most popular. These nappies are made using biodegradable, natural materials and are softer to the skin than disposable nappies. Made from renewable resources and free from chemicals and bleaches, they are dermatologically tested and better for babies, especially those prone to eczema. They are available in a range of sizes, as with disposable nappies, but the nappies and packaging can be thrown on the compost as they will naturally break down, usually within a couple of weeks. They are as absorbent and comfortable for the child as regular disposable nappies, however cost a little more.

So, with the increasing range of environmentally friendly nappies available, there is no need to feel guilty about the waste your household produces! Go eco-friendly and benefit your baby and the environment, with little change in cost-in fact, if you opt for cloth nappies you`ll actually be saving money! When it comes to baby questions and answers, nappy choices are relatively simple!
